Yesterday we did my favorite fall activity – apple picking at Mercier Orchards! We went last year for the first time and it will always be an annual event for our family. It was pretty chilly and overcast, but that did not deter us from our fun.
The apples are not sprayed with pesticides so you can eat them straight off the tree. As they tell you in the orchard, you only pay for the apples that fill your bag and not your belly.
We definitely ate our fill! And we came home with twice as many apples as last year so I can make more homemade apple butter and applesauce as well as other apple goodies. Plus plenty for just eating. Apples are probably C’s favorite fruit and E just loves to gnaw on an apple slice.
From this past week’s menu, the Slow Cooker 40 Clove Garlic Chicken was outstanding and surprisingly not overwhelming on the garlic flavor. The leftovers were incredible in my Shepherd’s Pie. I make it like my Scottish grandmother used to – shredded chicken stirred right into the mashed potatoes with peas and carrots. The garlic, which was reminiscent of roasted garlic, added a nice layer of nutty, sweetness to the dish. The rest of the week was off kilter with lots of leftovers.
I’ve been flirting with dairy foods lately and I think E might finally be over her intolerance. I’ve been hesitant to eat too much, but I’m doing a happy dance inside as I have really missed eating it, especially cheese. I’m still being cautious with it though. Stay tuned.
