Sports Nutrition
Eat to nourish, energize and flourish!TM Words to live by. Food does many things for us, but for athletes the primary purpose is to do exactly what my tagline says. When athletes eat the proper foods at the appropriate times, energy, high performance and quick recovery can be expected. The trick is knowing what foods to eat and when.
I partner with my clients to come up with individual plans based on performance goals, lifestyle, health parameters and specific demands of the sport. While the majority of my client are runners, cyclists and triathletes, I am well-versed and understand the demands of a wide variety of sports. I have helped numerous athletes with a variety of issues, including:
- healthy weight loss
- race day nutrition plan
- nutrition periodization for the training cycle
- target certain health conditions related to sports such as anemia, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, muscle cramps, GI issues and recurring fractures
- improve performance through nutrition
- proper weight gain
- off-season weight maintenance
- ensure nutrition adequacy for those adhering to special diets
Metabolic testing is available via the New Leaf system. Lactate threshold, resting metabolic rate and metabolic efficiency tests are offered either on the bike or treadmill at Georgia Sports Chiropractic.
For Endurance Athletes looking for a competitive edge, I am offering something a little off the traditional sports nutrition path:
Traditional sports nutrition advice advocates a high carbohydrate diet. While this does provide energy and can result in good performance, gastrointestinal (GI) distress is far too often the result for many athletes. Everyone has experienced GI distress at some point in their athletic careers. It isn’t pleasant and something not easily forgotten.
There is a better way. What if you could train your body to rely more on your fat stores (which are in endless supply) and spare your limited supply of glycogen? In turn, you would then need to ingest fewer calories during exercise, making potential GI distress issues less likely to occur. By shifting the macronutrient composition of foods eaten, coupled with a periodization plan for both nutrition and training, a person can become more metabolically efficient, teaching the body to rely more on internal fat stores at higher intensities, thereby sparing muscle glycogen.
My goal is to help athletes perform at the best of their abilities by working with them to create a sound nutrition program that fuels their performance and health needs. Metabolic testing is also available via the New Leaf system on either a treadmill or bike. While metabolic testing isn’t a requirement for my services, it does provide specific, scientific and personalized information from which to base nutrition plans.
